Cat getaways

How do you stop running away from home?

Your cat is more of an outdoor cat and is crazy to walk around the yard and explore the whole garden. These are cat getaways! From time to time, he disappears from home and returns only after two or three days.

Experts say that such behavior has various causes. Which have nothing to do with the environment in which the cat lives.

Territorial animal

Cat getaways are embarrassing behavior for any owner. But it is not a pathological phenomenon. It is a behavior that is more acceptable in cats than in dogs. That’s because she has a reputation for being more independent and cat escapades are better tolerated.

The causes of this behavior are diverse and sometimes have nothing to do with the environment in which it lives.Escape defined as a departure from the territory. But the boundaries of your cat’s territory defined by herself and her neighbors.

Indeed, the cat’s habitat varies greatly depending on population, food, the presence of males and females. Thus, a male will expand his territory even at the risk of meeting opponents, when he will spot a female in the heat. It is the main cause of the flight of uncastrated males.

The territory of a cat, whether it has access to the interior or not, organized in different areas of life: food, hunting, rest, play, breeding, disposal. Certain areas or routes can claimed by many cats.

Thus, certain factors affect the distance between the house and the territorial limit of your cat.

Breeding and hunting

These are two of the causes of cats leaving home. After adapting to a family, the cat that has access to the outside will gradually move away, more and more, to hunt and breed. But he will return home every two or three days. The frequency with which he returns to the nest depends on his ability to hunt, on the food he receives, on the neighbors, on the females in the heat, on the males he meets, on the weather outside, and so on.

Changing the territory

It is very difficult for a cat to change its habitat. But this happens when you change your address. It was very common then for the cat to return to its old territory.

Indeed, his new home may even be the territory of another cat and then conflicts are imminent. Also, the cat will be reluctant to leave its old territory to another suitor. So when the move takes place in the same city or even in the same neighborhood, it happens that the cat adopted by the new owners of the territory. To the great regret of its owners!

Sometimes, as a result of moving to a more distant city, the cat can disappear, without the owners knowing anything about its fate.

What can you do?

For the cat not to move too far away from the house, the first thing to do is to neuter it or neuter it if it is male. Unfortunately, there are no completely safe recipes that could make your cat stop venturing on such escapades. All you can do is try to welcome her every time she comes home.

And also not to miss his favorite food or the toys he loves the most! If you have decided to move into a new home, you need to follow a series of easy-to-follow tips. These tips allow a faster adaptation of the cat in the new territory. Until you finish unpacking and installing it in the new home, leave the cat in a quiet corner. With the old favorite accessories, the litter box and the bowl he has used to for so long. Thus, the new place will get a somewhat familiar air.

Then, gradually, let her visit the new house calmly, opening all the doors for her. The moment you walk, you stay as natural as possible and not a force to return or enter a certain place. Leave the door open and clear the way. This way the cat will be able to return, to be able to take refuge, in case he might be afraid. Cats need a safe exit to be quiet. This allows them to be more daring. They will know that, in case of danger, they have a place to take refuge.

If the cat gets stuck, it will panic and start scratching. He may run away suddenly, without having time to take olfactory or visual cues to return.

You can also use a synthetic analogue other than the cat’s facial pheromones. This product has the role of reproducing those substances that cats “deposit” in known places or on the people to whom they attach. The product will spray on the furniture. It has the role of calming the cat, which thus has the impression that it has been living in that place for a long time.

Necessary precautions

Even if the cat got used to the new location, do not let it go out in the garden too early. Gradually you can take her for a walk, but only with you. It is advisable to put a leash on it.

Only after he has gotten used to the yard and will know how to get out and into the house, will you be able to leave him more freedom. The main risk for a cat left alone outside without knowing the area in advance is to run after a bird or chased by another animal. So she will not know how to return and will tempt to return to the old house. There are always these risks if you leave the cat free.

However, it is true that some cats appreciate the comfort of the home and do not stray far from the couch! Others, however, are more adventurous. In this case, you need to be more vigilant.

I live at home, with a fairly large yard and garden. But I also have a very high wall fence that my cats can’t climb. Thus, they are in perfect safety. We moved to another city with the cats, on the eve of winter. The cats stayed in the house and had the opportunity to explore it leisurely. The following spring I left them in the yard and the garden. They enjoyed researching them. But remember, I can’t go out in the yard. Here is an example from which you learn to keep your cat.

Unfortunately, in the old house I lost two kittens who liked escapades: Tzutzu and Tzuky.

Other hazards

It can happen that, from its escapades, the cat returns with parasites or germs of diseases that transmitted from cat to cat. As such, if your cat used to wandering around a lot, you should know that there are additional vaccines that need to give to cats. They come in contact with other stray animals can contract feline leukemia, chlamydiosis, infectious peritonitis and I have countless types of fungal infections. That is why it is advisable to consult a veterinarian, who can help you in this regard.

Conclusions

If you love your cat you will remember the tips in this article. The cat is an independent animal and needs freedom. But I say that this freedom that you give to cats must be somewhat controlled. Remember that a cat in a new territory will try to get to know him to step by step and not all of a sudden. When you have a cat, you have to arm yourself first with patience. And with a lot of love. You will definitely rewarded.

If you liked this article do not hesitate to leave me a comment describing experience with your cat on this topic. Thank you.

I’m a big cat loving, since the young baby.   My mother was great loving cats, grandmother as well.   My daughter is coming to the end. My daughter loves cats so much that she makes a second faculty: veterinary medicine.   Four generations, what do you think?

You can now learn to communicate directly with your cat.

  1. Thanks for writing this informative article on Cat getaways. I found this article to be very interesting and I love all the pictures too.

We use to have a black cat who was dropped off in our area as a kitten in the middle of winter. We took her in, but couldn’t keep her inside as she would escape every chance she had. We got her fixed and made her as comfortable as we could in our shead. We even put in a doggy door for her. She loved it.

We had her for a very long time. Ser clammed a 3 block area as her own and would patrol it every day and return home in the afternoon. If a male or any other cat came into our yard she would chase them off, even fighting with them to get them to leave if needed, She was a great cat and I miss her a lot now.

Thanks for reminding me of her again.

  5. I found the section about the necessary precautions particularly useful. I hadn’t thought about how important it was not to let the cat freely move around the garden when we have just moved to a house. Yeah, now that i read it, it makes perfect sense that it will tempt to return to the old house. Thanks for this.

    1. Thanks for the comments Ann. When you have a cat you have to think like a cat. Thus I can protect her from possible dangers to which she is exposed due to her nature.

  6. One thing that I actually can resonate better with here is the fact that cats are territorial animals. As much as they are pets, they also hate to be tampered with or breaching their boundaries. They play a lot and can also punish just to reiterate to the owners that they have their territories marked and not to be invaded. I love cats a lot. Though I lost my ‘miss cindy’ (the name of my cat) some few years ago

    1. Thank you for your comment Kimberly. I’m glad you love cats and I’m sorry to hear you lost Miss Cindy.. Maybe you take another cat, save a soul and make yourself happy.
