New food into your cat’s food

By their nature, cats are animals faithful to the eating habits they are already familiar with. So don’t surprised if your cat prefers the old food over the new one, even if the latter is superior in terms of quality. That is why any change in his diet must be carefully thought out.

To introduce new food into your cat’s food, you will do it gradually and it can take 7-10 days.

Do you have a fussy cat?

When you want to introduce a new food into your cat’s food, do not rush to categorize it as capricious. It is advisable to take into account several factors and watch it within a day to see what and how it eats.

Your cat may often be fussy about food. You end up wondering if he has a health or behavior problem.

And one more thing not to forgotten: stop pampering her. Cats are like children: when they eat too much candy, they will crave food.

Once you have decided to change your cat’s diet and introduce a new food,

the first step you need to do is to arm yourself with patience and perseverance. Then it is advisable to take into account some important aspects to apply repeatedly. I will detail these aspects further.

First of all

A cat must always eat in the same place and not disturbed during the meal.

A nutritionally correct diet for your cat must meet certain qualities: the

  • food must meet the nutritional needs of the cat
  • to increase its reproductive performance
  • to promote the growth of healthy and shiny fur
  • easy to administer

In no case do not feed it with leftovers from your table.

The cat is a creature endowed by nature with the ability to notice all the changes that take place around it. It is enough to change her bowl of food so that her food habits disturbed. Do not forget that some cats are demanding even of the material from which the bowl in which they receive food made.

There should always be a container of clean, fresh water next to the food bowl. Especially if your cat eats more dry food.

What can you do?

The first criterion that is good to keep in mind when choosing food for your cat is to satisfy its energy and nutritional needs. If this criterion met and the food contains all the essential nutrients in its development but your cat eats less than usual. Do not rush to conclude that it is something of the moment.

Lack of appetite can also cause by a stress factor. Stress can cause by several factors: you have a new pet in the household, a family member has left home, or you have recently moved into a new home. Only when the sources of stress disappear will your cat return to its old eating habits.

But if she seems happy, lively, and her fur is healthy and her eyes are bright, you have nothing to worry about.

Dietary changes can also cause by some health problems. So go to the vet with the cat! If the medical examination does not reveal any health problems, the cat may try to manipulate you. Therefore, it is good to know that, in adult cats, the change of diet is progressive, during 7-10 days.

My recommendation is to feed your cat, as much as possible, at regular times two or three times a day. In the case of older cats, one meal a day may be enough.

In pregnant and lactating cats, the energy and protein requirements are higher. The number of meals increases to 4 or 5 per day.

In cats that will neuter or neutered, it recommended reducing the ration by one third immediately after the operation, to prevent obesity.

General rules

These rules recommended to followed for all age groups. The food administered must be slightly warm because a cold food in the refrigerator is not to the liking of a cat. The most suitable temperature is 37-38 degrees Celsius.

If the cat has not consumed the entire portion, reduce the amount only to how much it has consumed. If he wants more, he won’t be late to let you know. It is also advisable to store food properly.

You should regularly wash and disinfect the dishes from which the cat eats and drinks water.

Another aspect that is good to keep in mind is that the cat should always eat in the same place. It must not disturbed during the meal.

For proper digestion, the cat needs peace. That’s why it’s not good to play with it immediately after it has eaten. Otherwise, you cause him discomfort and in this way you risk regurgitating the food.

Important things when introducing a new food

  1. Gradually get to know new food!

This is the simplest and best way to get your cat used to the new diet. The transition period should start by mixing 25% of the new food with 75% of what you are already used to. Then, for 7-10 days, slowly reverse the proportion, gradually increasing the amount of new food. In this way, the amount of old food will decrease, without the cat feeling this. At the end of this period, he will completely switch to the new diet.

It is also possible that you will encounter some problems during this transit period. Thus, the cat may consume only the food with which it accustomed or may simply refuse to eat. But just as well, a healthy cat can switch to the new food in a day or two without any problem.

2. Attention to language!

After you buy your cat a new type of food, don’t just put it in the food bowl. He may refuse food, if you verbally assault her, she won’t eat at all!

You should know that this is not the ideal time to show him who the boss is. It is preferable to present her food in a pleasant tone, to show it to her and to encourage her to taste it.

3. Insist and don’t give up!

If your cat does not want to eat the new type of food, it is very important not to give up the idea of changing its menu too quickly. In the early days, she resisted the temptation to have leftovers from the household or the food she was already used to.

Remember that we can educate by cats, just as we educate them. It will be very difficult for you to impose another diet on another occasion if you give up quickly,

4. Switching from canned to croquettes!

Switching from wet to dry foods can sometimes be very difficult for your cat to bear. If it continues to refuse the croquettes, mix them with a little lukewarm water.

Another method would be to put the croquettes for a few minutes in the microwave.

You must make sure that the cat will eat it within 20 minutes if you mix the dry wound with water.
After this time, the food will degrade and need to replaced.

Also, don’t forget that there should always be a container of clean, fresh water next to the food bowl. In this sense, an ideal solution is the fountain type drinkers. They have the advantage of always providing your kitten with fresh water. It recommended that it placed 3-4 m from the place where the food is.

Conclusions

It is very important to follow my advice if you want to introduce a new food to your cat.

Maybe you want to give him a higher quality food than the current one because in time you learned about the nutritional needs of your cat. Or maybe your veterinarian has recommended a diet for your cat because he is suffering.

In both cases, it would be advisable to learn to gradually introduce the new food to be successful when your approach.

The cat is a creature endowed by nature with the ability to notice all the changes that take place around it. It is enough to change her bowl of food so that her food habits disturbed.

Can you tell me if you changed your cat’s food and how you did it? Or any other thoughts you have about the subject. Thank you.

I’m a big cat loving, since the young baby.   My mother was great loving cats, grandmother as well.   My daughter is coming to the end. My daughter loves cats so much that she makes a second faculty: veterinary medicine.   Four generations, what do you think?

You can now learn to communicate directly with your cat.

  1. Hello,

I enjoyed reading your interesting article.

Like you I am a cat lover and my much loved cat passed away last year from a heart attack.

I like your photographs as well as the top head visual in the header.

The advice you provided was very helpful and exactly the same as the vet gave us when we had to put another cat on a special diet for kidney issues.

Gradually adding new amounts of new food to lower amounts of the old food was the only way to change his diet.

    Best wishes,

    Cameron

    1. Thanks for the comment Cameron. I’m sorry to hear that your cat died last year. RIP. I’m glad you find my advice correct and coincide with that of your veterinarian. All that is best for you. Carmen

  2. This was a very informative post. I was aware that cats can be fussy eaters but your suggestions to not get flustered and give them 7-10 days to adjust would definitely work. I had a big Tom cat called Sylvester when I was little and really enjoyed his character. He was so huge and had amazing markings on his body and was silky soft to pat. I’m sure he considered us all his servants.

  4. As somebody who regularly house sits cats in my area, I have often wondered about the eating habits of cats compared to dogs. How cats can eat some, and then leave the rest for later whereas dogs tend to swallow their food down quickly.  You have offered some excellent advice on how to manage “fussy cats”.  Your point about neutered cats to prevent the risk of obesity was also really good.  I will share that with my neighbours. Do you recommend any particular brands or are there any brands you would avoid?

    1. Thanks for the comment Trevor. I feed my cats dry Cat Chow food to prevent urinary problems. Having many cats, I consider the value for money excellent. I also give them wet food Felix, kity cat, whiskey. There are many brands on the market, but I would avoid the colored ones, they do not have enough protein (dry food). Depending on the cat, some have certain indications for different diets.

  5. This is a good post about how to change your cat’s eating habits.  You usually do have gradually introduce the food a little bit at a time, to make sure they will take to the new food.  I will not that some vets say, if the food is healthy, such as meats, that could be better for a cat’s health than processed pet foods.  So if you are going to use commercial cat food, make sure there are no artificial preservatives, flavorings, or additives, and that it doesn’t have too much vegetables in it.  I would recommend this post to others.

    1. Thanks for the comment Anthony. And for the fact that you want to recommend this post to others. You are absolutely right about processed food. Colorful dry food should be avoided. And the food label must be read very carefully.

  6. Thanks for the tips I know it would be of great help to the public as it has been of help to me. I really love cats although i don’t really have one now, i would do so in the next few months.
